7/11/2006 AT ONE WITH COSMIC PARIS

Cosmic Paris now reps me in Europe. I'm really looking forward to working with Sophie, Vanessa and Marie. If you are a commercial cinematography geek check out Patrick Duroux's Miller Light commercial and Stephan Vallee's Samsonite commercial, two of my all time favorites.

7/01/2006 HOW THE FRENCH CELEBRATE 4TH OF JULY

It's a little know fact but this is how Nicolas honors Independance day, smoke a cig and stand next to a red Jeep. Voilla!

6/20/2006 BIT BY THE VIPER

Ok actually nothing bad happened, it works well and I'm glad I tried it. I shot a music video for the Faders / My Ex-Girlfriend is a Super-Hero movie tie in song using the Thompson Viper Zeiss Digi-Zoom and Angenieux Digital Optimo and S.two data recorder. (kindly provided by Mel @ TCH ). It worked out well and I would use it again. Here's a few still frames from the data capture... These are shrunk 40% and compressed alot. The Uncompressed ones are huge, 8MB each. Thanks To Jake, Nicolas and Julien for helping out on this one.

I'm A WINNER WINNER WINNER WINNER WINNER etc. The Nike 6.0 spot that I shot for Charles Jensen of Anonymous Content has won it's category in the national AICP award show. Click below and you can see it...

5/24/2006 POSTCARD FROM 3 CAMERAS ON PEDS LAND

I Shot a spot on video where the surprise guest on a Jerry Springer style show is a giant remote control. It was strange to have 3 camera operators on studio pedestel cameras, instead of shooting single camera film which is what I typically do. You get alot of coverage very quickly this way. I did end up doing some hand held shooting of the melee at the end of the day to finish it off.

Here is my Key Grip ( not hungover ) who was despondent until I gave him a studio pedestel camera to drive, this cheered him up a bit.

4/24/2006 REVENGE OF THE GEEKS: NAB 2006

I'm like a moth to the flame wtih NAB. This year there were a few new products that I wanted to check out. On my must-see list were the Silicon Imaging HD Camera and the RED 4k Digital Cinema camera. Both cameras record data to drives instead of tapes. In theory the Red camera is an incredible product — assuming it will ever eventually do what the company claims. The design is much more conceptual than functional. Aaton showed a new prototype version of the 35 - 3 called the Penelope. It's adjustable from 4perf to 3perf and 2perf. Cool.

4/15/2006 WHAT IS A CREDITO?

The plush green character Credito was created by the European bank Cetelem to encourage customers to feel comfortable about the idea of using credit cards. He's soft, round, smiley and very cute. In a commercial I shot in Capetown for Rafael Fernandez in January, Credito helps a guy buy a car and then he helps the guy pick up some ladies.

3/31/2006 MAJORCA, SPAIN

I just shot another Cetelem job in Majorca. It stars Credito as Mitch from Baywatch. I'm trying to recreate Spanish food at home now. Last night I made a omlette de patatas and p'amb oli last night. Yum. ...looking for a feature to shoot this summer.

3/23/2006 WE WILL MISS YOU NICK.

Nick was a favorite A.C. when he was not flying his Aerobatic plane. He was always a joy to be around. I will miss him.

I'm not complaining, just saying...

2/25/2006 GRADUATION TEST SCREENING

The Graduation folks held their first and much anticipated test screening in Culver City last night. It feels like a long time since we were all on location in Pittsburgh last summer. "Graduation" debuted in front of a recruited audience of mostly teenagers who were pretty absorbed. They returned a very high score, which our exec producer, Jason Blum, said was pretty exceptional. The material they viewed was from a temp color corrected DV tape of digital dailies and it looked passable — if you can believe it. Still, the movie played very well, you could just feel it in the room.

2/20/2006 JOY of TELECINE

This is what happens when you work with a great gaffer ( Jake Sarfaty ) and a talented colorist ( Marshall Plante )! Thanks guys. Stills from the New Pornographers' "Sing Me Spanish Techno."

2/6 - 9/2006 WRIGLEY'S
2/

...shot three Wrigley's Gum spots with Rafael last week; they went great, one or two of the spots may end up on the reel. Kerber, who ran C camera for me, had to wear a cowboy costume as camouflage and grab coverage amid the extras on rodeo day. Technically he didn't have to wear rhinestone chaps but we told him it was absolutely necessary. He looked good... Okay. Kerber, I cain't quit you.

1/28/2006 VANCOUVER

...shot the first track off the New Pornographers' latest album, Twin Cinema, with Palms in Vancouver. The song is still in my head. After wrap we ate a mountain of Chinese food on Granville Ave. Camera, grip and electric crews were great.

1/23/2006 CAPE TOWN

I...just back from shooting a Cetelem spot with Rafael in South Africa. I have more photos to follow; a few especially nice Hasselblad panoramic (X-Pan) snaps too.

Road Location for Cetelem near Capetown.

1/10/ 2006 Wide is good. I've been shooting lately with my new Hassleblad X-Pan. It uses 35mm film and shoots panoramic (24mm x 65mm) negatives. The format is a new challenge for me. It's very interesting composing for a 3:1 aspect ratio. It's a naturally well-suited for shooting landscapes, but I want to see where else I can take it.

1/1/2006 I've been making resolutions today and one of them is this photo blog. Looking back on 2005, I'm not sad to see the year go, but I realize that I reached lots of milestones and I'm grateful for them. Working with Chris Doyle was an important one. Through some twist of fate he shot one day of B-camera for me on the Strokes' "Juicebox" that Palms directed. We did alot of eating, drinking and hanging out together for the week we were in NYC. Chris is such a bottomless well of creativity and ideas, that just being around him fills you with inspiration. He set a new bar for me, in a way, in so far as how dedicated you have to be to do his level of work. You have to work beyond and outside of your insecurities and vanities. I feel renewed.
