04/20/2009 VANCOUVER FUN STUFF !

I'm using the Skater Scope / Skater Dolly / Tokina 11-16 Duclos Conversion quite a bit. It's a potent combination on this shoot.

04/19/2009 VANCOUVER - DAY 2 SURROUNDED BY PINK

Our Star seems to like her closeups at 12mm and 2inches. Kind of like how Roman Polasky and John Alonzo shot Faye Dunaway in Chinatown. Kinda.

04/17/2009 VANCOUVER

I'm up north filming some toy commercials. More soon.

03/19/2009 VIRAL ADS THAT GET IT.

Sometimes we shoot things for the web that are supposed to go viral, but they lack the spark... Here's two that I saw recently that have it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FiLoANg6nNY and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2FX9rviEhw Nice Work.

03/14/2009 CAMERAGUILD RED CLASS

I taught a class, or I think it's better to say I led some guided testing of the Red camera with a group of 15 IA 600 ( Camerapersons Union ) DP's at Laser Pacific today. It was interesting to see how my colleagues approached and reacted to the Red/

03/9/2009 FRANKEN LENS CONVERSION

It works! Tokia 11-16 in PL mount. The pictures are amazingly good. Dr Lens is going to take it the rest of the way with a Stainless Mount and proper gears. Doing the conversion was fun in a build the ship in the bottle kind of way.

12/20/2008 LAST OF 2008

It looks like Charles Jensen gets the last job of the year award, a series of 4 comedy spots for AbsolutePoker.com We surfed through different movie genre's: "John Hughes", "French Connection", "Verhoven in the 90's". This still is from "Polanski's Student film"

12/14/2008 BASTARDOS REVIEW

We got a very insightful review in Laterna Magica for director Amat Escalante's "Los Bastardos," the first feature I've shot to go to the Cannes Film Festival. It is so rare that a film reviewer takes the time to consider the cinematography, something I've long appreciated about Variety's Todd McCarthy, and now here with Laterna Magica's Benoît Thevenin. In addition to the outtake about the camerawork (below) you can read/Google translate the rest of the review here: laternamagika

12/12/2008 SONY ALPHA

I shot a spot for Sony's Alpha A350 this week. A handsome mid-aged couple on African safari (aka, Tejon Ranch) tests out the new camera on an elephant and a few zebras. Suzy the elephant offered an outstanding performance. (Suzy does tricks for little red Swedish fish; you can see one near her trunk if you look closely.)

12/09/2008 SAN FRAN

Loved working on a Hubba Bubba spot up in San Francisco this past week. It was for the Dreamworks computer animated film "Monsters vs. Aliens" starring Seth Rogen and Reese Witherspoon. We shot outside in Alamo Square on a truly beautiful Bay Area day.

11/05/2008 MACRO MADNESS

Shot of a surgical device picking up a sesame seed in a spot for Prairie Hospital, directed by Rafael Fernandez.

10/30/2008 PROTOTYPE CAMERA SHOOT

"Your mission, should you decide to accept it is to travel to the northern regions of California with a carefully seleced group of models and shoot professional looking footage with a prototype consumer camera." ( and when we say consumer we mean it ) The Bomb-like object (below) is a gyro-stabilizer which was great to help tame the tiny camera.

10/14/2008 AIRPLANE AND LENS FLARE MAYHEM:

I've been kind of a lame blogger last month, I'll try to do better. This is some BTS from a Hamilton Watch commercial:

10/24/2007 NO SUN, NO FILMING

There's a story about Akira Kurosawa while filming his masterpiece "RAN" waiting for days with a thousand extras, hundreds of horses on standby until the clouds moved to look just right in the frame. We just had two guys and a tame rabbit, but we also needed sun for this scene, so we waited.

10/09/2007 BASTARDOS DAY ONE

Today we started "Los Bastardos" It's been 11 months wait and now it's happening.

9/04/2007 ALL YOUR BALTARS ARE BELONG TO US

As if taking most of the Porsche 356's and Jaguar E types was not bad enough, apparently Asian photographers / collectors are stripping America of it's precious Baltars. These lenses were the standard issue lens in Hollywood from the 1940's to the 1970's. Who can say what films have been shot with any given set ? Oh yeah, the Baltars still make great images, just now on the other side of the Pacific. Won't you help save the Baltars ?
